“The LORD
is with you, mighty warrior…”—Judges
6:12
A father once
asked his little boy to go and buy a packet of sugar and some basic stuff for
the home in the night. The hour was very late into the night and it was dark.
The boy felt fearful but he had to oblige. Noting the fears in his son the
father promised to stand on the road to watch over the little one as he went to
the shop just a few meters away from their home.
“Go, son. I am here watching over you.
Nothing will harm you. Go. Run. Fast. Okay?”
“Yes, dad. But promise me. Won’t you
run away the moment I move away from you?”
“No. Son. Go!
Hurry up!”
The boy
started off. Every step he turned back to check if dad was keeping the promise.
“Dad, are you
there?” he asked every time he turned.
“Yes, I am.
Go on, son.”
“Dad, are you
still there?” the boy shouted when he lost sight of his father standing in the
dark night.
“Yes”, went
the reply.
Suddenly, at
some point the boy did not hear the father’s response and he began to panic and
cry and frantically run back towards where the father was standing until he
realized the father was still there.
“Son, I told
you I am here. Go. Nothing will harm you as long as I am here.”
The boy did.
As usual, he was continually checking with the father to see if he was there
until he reached the shop and returned with the items.
The knowledge
that someone bigger than him was watching over him made the whole difference to the little boy. It kept him going
against all odds until he made it to his destination and back. Think about that
for a moment, my friend and look at this:
The Bible
says, Someone Bigger than any powerful biggest bigger is with us. How much more
should be our sense of confidence as we face life’s challenges today? God says,
“Son, I am still here watching over you. Go. You are protected.”
Why don’t we
thank him for such a blessed assurance? Gideon witnessed His faithfulness;
Goliath swallowed his pride as he kissed death at the presence of this Bigger
Somebody; the Roman jailers, kings and governors were embarrassed to see their
strongest iron shackles coming shattering down at the command of that Bigger Somebody
to let Peter walk free out of that most notorious of all jails (Acts 12 & 5); Hezekiah
rescheduled his date with death and postponed his “funeral” until fifteen solid
years into the future at the behest of this Bigger Somebody ( Isaiah 38).
What else shall we
say? You and I can trust Him today and walk out without any fear because as
John testifies, “he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world”(1
John 4:4, ESV).
As for me, I
am proud to know that I have such a Father who is Bigger than the toughest villain and
bully out there! Therefore, I step out today to meet my day with a daring spirit
knowing that He whose eye is always on the sparrow, watches over me as well. He sees
and will take care of every stone and missile the enemy will dare throw at my
little head on the way. Yes,
“I may walk through valleys
as
dark as death,
but I won’t be afraid.”
but I won’t be afraid.”
(Psalms 23: 4, Contemporary English Version)
Because I know that He walks
... at my side.
[His] trusty shepherd’s crook
makes me feel secure.
[His] trusty shepherd’s crook
makes me feel secure.
(Psalm 23:4b, The Message)
Dare plot
against me, and you may as well just embarrass yourself for my God goes before
me to fight for me. And that makes the whole difference to me. Therefore, what shall I say this morning?
Lord, thank
you for your assurance that you are watching over me and that you will continue
to do so throughout this day as I grope in the darkness of this life. Clasp my hand in yours and take me to victory
lane in Jesus’ name, Amen.
